From award-winning author Kirsten Pursell, follow Scarlet as she navigates self-discovery, love and friendship later in life in this coming-of-middle-age romance. [Previously published as The Scarlet D*]

Fueled by the unrealistic expectations of Nicholas Sparks' novels, Scarlet sets her sights on South Carolina as the backdrop for her new beginning. After a thirty-year marriage, divorce offers her a chance to start over, far from the reminders of a past life.

Scarlet begins life on Sullivan's Island, seeking like-minded women as she joins a divorced women's book club. She finds herself in a world of unexpected complexities. When she revels her past, judgment is harsh.

On Sullivan's Island, Scarlet's dormant desires are awakened as she meets Ben, an attractive younger man. However, a chance encounter with the self-assured, age-appropriate Beau opens her heart to the possibility of love. But will the unexpected arrival of the man who nearly broke her reconsider her choices?

As Scarlet settles into her new life, she dissects her past, embraces second chances, and finds herself open to the complications of starting over in her fifties.

Praise for this book

Rarely does a book grab me by the heart and refuse to let go the way The Scarlet D did. Kirsten Pursell has written a deeply personal, beautifully vulnerable, and painfully honest exploration of what it means to start over in midlife.

There are books that tell a story, and then there are books that mirror your own life back at you—The Scarlet D is one of the latter. From the pain of a dissolving marriage to the thrill of rediscovering passion, Kirsten Pursell takes readers on a deeply personal, emotionally charged ride.

The Scarlet D is a book that sneaks up on you. At first, it feels like a simple story of reinvention, but as you turn the pages, it transforms into something deeply personal, raw, and incredibly moving. Kirsten Pursell has a way of making you feel like you’re sitting across from a close friend, sharing a bottle of wine and trading life’s hardest truths.

🌹 A fiery rebirth painted in prose—where divorce becomes the canvas for a woman’s unapologetic self-discovery.

✨ Review
**💔 Raw Reinvention: Pursell’s Scarlet doesn’t just leave a marriage—she torches societal expectations, crafting a new identity with equal parts vulnerability and venom.

**🗽 Midlife Metamorphosis: Forget “Eat Pray Love”—this is reinvention with calloused hands and smudged mascara. Yoga retreats? No. More like whiskey neat and karaoke at 2 AM.

**🔥 Narrative Heat: The prose crackles—part confession, part battle cry. Flashbacks of suburban ennui cut like glass, while present-day risks feel like gulps of stolen oxygen.

**👠 Character Alchemy: Scarlet’s flaws are her superpowers. Her missteps make her triumph over self-doubt land like a knockout punch.

**🎭 Dark Humor Gold: Pursell mines tragedy for laugh-till-you-cringe moments.

⭐ Star Breakdown (0–5)
Emotional Depth: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) (A masterclass in turning heartbreak into horsepower.)
Pacing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) (Sags slightly in midlife-reflection montages—but recovers with a third-act blaze.)
Originality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4.5/5) (Divorce lit without the clichés? Bless.)
Catharsis Factor: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) (You’ll want to text your ex just to hang up mid-ring.)
Cover Design: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) (The scarlet foil D is chef’s kiss—wish the font had more bite.)
Overall: 4.6/5 - Like finding a lipstick-stained manifesto scribbled on a bar napkin—messy, magnetic, and impossible to forget.

This isn’t just a book; it’s a permission slip to burn what no longer serves you—and dance in the ashes.

5/5: Oh Scarlet thank you so much for bringing your vibrancy jumping out the pages for us readers! and thank you actually to Kirsten who created her to do so for us. this book was just brilliant. it was witty, fun, bright and heartening. but its not fluffy or cliched. its still got its emotions wrapped around the love, rediscovery and questions of life and in life. but its all done in such a way that even with the harder or more emotional parts, you still love reading this.
Scarlet immediately had me wanting to be protective over her. but also want to hang out and get to just be by her as she started living life again. because after divorce Scarlet is certainly feeling all the hard blows. she is certainly feeling lost and uncertain of who she is anymore. shes not perfect, shes taken risk and come out the other side making many mistakes. but could now be her time to forgive herself and be brave enough to find her future? perhaps with a bit of fun along the way?and it might just happen when she moves to this new town, she finds new friends and a lover. can she fall in love with someone and more importantly herself again?
Scarlet is such a brilliant character. she is sassy ad fierce but shes also soft and thoughtful and all round full of zest. and he chemistry with the males. phwoer...
its also really refreshing to get this age group talked about like this.
the drama from the book club was ace. and her friendship with Missy was dreaaaams. and i think Missy could have her own story.
